Angelique Kidjo
This year UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and Grammy award-winning world music artist and mother, Angelique Kidjo, has united with Pampers and UNICEF to help achieve the goal of eliminating MNT by 2012, by releasing a song that encapsulates the hope surrounding the new 'Give the Gift of Life' campaign. Mothers can help raise much needed funding through the Pampers 1 download = 1 donation campaign.
From October through December 2009, any person can make a difference with a simple and free download of the Pampers and UNICEF campaign song 'You Can Count On Me' by Angelique. 1 download = 1 donation means: for every one free download of the 'You Can Count On Me' song, Pampers will make one donation to UNICEF to contribute to vaccination activities for the elimination of MNT.

Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT)
In developing countries where women often give birth at home in sometimes unsanitary conditions, they and their newborn babies are at risk of contracting tetanus - tetanus spores can pass through the umbilical cord when cut, infecting both mother and baby. The disease rages through newborns within days of exposure to the bacteria and almost always leads to a quick and painful death. However, tetanus is preventable with a series of low-cost tetanus vaccines.
UNICEF Director of Private Fundraising and Partnerships Philip O'Brien, "Maternal and neonatal tetanus deaths are part of the loss of millions of lives each year. This is unacceptable, and there is still much to do. The challenge is to scale up what is proving successful. Innovative partnerships such as this one can help UNICEF achieve those objectives."

Pampers® and UNICEF
Pampers® and UNICEF are aiming for no country to have MNT as a public health problem, where babies die from a completely preventable disease. One case of newborn tetanus is one too many.
For nearly 20 years P&G has been partnering with UNICEF in many different countries in a variety of initiatives to help improve the lives of the world's children. Their support includes corporate contributions and creative marketing programs which raised more than $20 million for UNICEF over the past 10 years.

'It is heartbreaking to know that a disease like tetanus, which is entirely preventable, is still taking the lives of so many vulnerable babies and their mums each year.'
