The UNICEF Snowflake Ball


The UNICEF Snowflake is a dazzling, illuminated crystal ornament that graces the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills each holiday season as a beacon of hope, peace and compassion for vulnerable children around the world.

This magnificant creation designed, engineered and entirely handcrafted by Ingo Maurer and his team in Germany, using 16,000 Baccarat crystal prisms.  More than a symbol, the UNICEF Snowflake is the centerpiece of an ambitious campaign to raise millions of dollars in support of health, immunization, nutrition, clean water and sanitation, education and protection for children in developing nations.

Each year since 2004, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF has hosted the annual Snowflake Ball, presented by Baccarat, to celebrate the lighting of the UNICEF Snowflake and to honor those whose philanthropic commitments support its mission to advance humanity.  The Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award, which  recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the work of UNICEF through philanthropy, volunteerism, advocacy or efforts in the field, is presented at the Snowflake Ball each year. The award is named for UNICEF's legendary and highly esteemed Goodwill Ambassador who advanced the work of UNICEF with exceptional devotion and grace.

At the 2006 gala, hosted by Bryant Gumbel, the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award was presented to Amy Robbins, an exceptional individual who has demonstrated visionary and transformative leadership on behalf of children worldwide. She chose to share this award with UNICEF's Ethiopia Country Representative, Bjorn Ljungqvist, to celebrate his 20 years of commitment to UNICEF.

In addition, Sotheby's Hugh Hildesley lead an auction at the gala, and UNICEF Ambassador and Executive Chef of Aquavit Marcus Samuelsson was joined by Chef Daniel Boulud and the Cipriani team in designing an exceptional menu. UNICEF Ambassador India.Arie ended the evening with a special performance.
