Watching a FIFA World Cup, one can really feel the power that comes from people all over the world focusing their attentions simultaneously on the same thing. In the 1998 FIFA World Cup, one-sixth of the entire world’s population tuned in for the final match, forming for an instant an international community that crossed ethnic, religious and economic boundaries.

One can only imagine the potential impact if we collectivelyfocus our attention on the world’s children. There are many ways you can get involved:

Pledge your support for children

Get involved in the Say Yes for Children campaign by pledging your support at www.unicef.org/say_yes

Organize at the local level

• Organize matches at your school or your children’s schools to benefit UNICEF programmes, many of which bring football programmes to children in difficult circumstances.
• Adopt a football team in an underprivileged area and raise money for their football kits and supplies.
• Dedicate time in your team’s matches to teaching children and young people about another country less fortunate than their own and the issues that children face there.
