5: In Africa, there were almost five times as many people in rural areas without an improved drinking water source than in urban areas in 2008

Target 7C: Halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation 

Indicator 7.8: Proportion of population using an improved drinking water source 

Current trends suggest that more than 90 percent of the global population will use improved drinking water sources by 2015. Globally, 84 percent of those without an improved drinking water source live in rural areas.

In Africa, there are almost five times as many people in rural areas without an improved drinking water source than in urban areas.

Accelerated progress is especially needed in Sub-Saharan Africa, home to 37% of those without improved drinking water sources.
