Indicator 7.9: Proportion of population using an improved sanitation facilities

In 18 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, less than a quarter of the population uses an improved sanitation facility. Since 1990, the population in Africa without an improved sanitation facility increased by 175 million to 584 million people in 2008.

Sanitation is fundamental to human development and security. The combined effects of inadequate sanitation, unsafe water supply and poor personal hygiene are responsible for 88 percent of childhood deaths from diarrhoea.
