Statement of Anthony Lake, UNICEF Executive Director, on protection of children in South Sudan

JUBA, South Sudan, 21 December 2013 - All of South Sudan's friends, who have such high hopes for the future of the world's youngest nation, are deeply concerned at the escalating violence across the country.

We at UNICEF hope that those who are involved in the violence, and those who have influence over them, will do everything possible to protect children, and make every effort to stop the fighting.

Children bear no responsibility for this violence or its causes. They are the generation that can fulfill the hopes on which this proud nation was recently founded. Protect them from harm, because these children and young people are the future of your nation.
