Adolescents in emergencies

Adolescent Programming in Conflict and Post-Conflict Situations (UNICEF, 2004)
The case studies presented in this study are examples of programming that encourages adolescent participation in community development and peacebuilding during crisis. Collectively, the case studies offer a wealth of information and new ideas.

Voices of Hope: Adolescents and the Tsunami (UNICEF, 2005)
Adolescents and young people have repeatedly proven that they can provide innovative solutions in the midst of complex humanitarian crises. Soon after the December 2004 tsunami they mobilized, helping to distribute aid, assisting with clean-up and rebuilding, and caring for those younger than themselves.

Untapped Potential: Adolescents affected by armed conflict (Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children, 2000)
This study reminds decision-makers and others that when the rights of children are invoked, "children" include adolescents. It identifies and highlights work that has taken place and is underway to address adolescents’ circumstances. At the same time, it emphasizes how much needs to be done on behalf of and with this group. Most of all, it calls on the international community to tap its own potential to act in support of adolescents’ capacities and to promote their well-being and the stability of their families and societies.

Map of Programmes for Adolescent Participation during Conflict and Post-Conflict Situations

The Map demonstrates how young people's participation in community life can develop their capacity and potential, especially during times of social conflict and crisis.  The Map is intended to encourage networking, information sharing and collaboration among colleagues working with adolescents in war-affected countries, and to generate new activities promoting young people's participation.
