UNITE FOR CHILDREN

UNICEF in emergencies

Malawi

Donor update - 20 October 2005
Since the launch of the UN Flash Appeal, the situation in Malawi has deteriorated rapidly, as the number of households that have depleted their food reserves grows.
This has a particularly serious impact on children and women, who are most vulnerable to food insecurity. Approximately one million children under the age of five and pregnant women are in need of humanitarian assistance. The number of moderately malnourished children is rising sharply and supplementary feeding programmes must be rapidly scaled up. Faced with this rapidly deteriorating situation, UNICEF requires US$ 13,000,000 to support life saving interventions.

Donor Update - 24 June 2005
About one-third of the population of Malawi, or 4.2 million people, are at risk of missing food entitlements between June 2005 and March 2006. More than one million of those in need of humanitarian assistance are children under the age of five and pregnant women. In view of the looming food crisis, UNICEF's appeal for nutrition-related activities has increased to US$ 1,733,000 from US$ 423,360.
