Central African Republic

Donor Update - 16 July 2004
Landlocked, weakened by years of conflicts, looting and violence, the CAR has become the most forgotten country-in-crisis in Africa. Some 1.2 out of the 3.8 million inhabitants have no access to basic health services. At the same time, the lack of safe drinking water increases the risk of water-borne infections, and CAR is the most seriously HIV-affected country in the region. As for education, over 250,000 children lost their right to education in zones now inaccessible due to the armed conflict. During and in the aftermath of the hostilities, children were traumatized by massacres, military aggression and repeated sexual violence. Urgent action is needed in this country where only 30% of the children are vaccinated, where less than 35% of girls go to school and where the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate is over 15%.
