UNICEF in emergencies

Donor alerts and field reports

Madagascar

The cyclone Gafilo was one of the strongest to hit Madagascar in twenty years. An estimated 390,000 children were seriously affected. Many of them are now homeless, have little or no access to safe drinking water, receive insufficient nourishment and cannot attend school. Within days of the emergency, UNICEF responded by distributing supplies, but it now requires further funding to assist children in the restoration of their right to basic healthy living conditions and security, as well as to education.
