Although health services were restored during 2000-2001, they are still limited. It is estimated that rural East Timorese have to walk, on average, more than one hour to reach the nearest health facility. Forty-five per cent of children under 5 years are malnourished and suffer from deficiencies of vitamin A and parasitic diseases.
