Southern Africa CrisisDonor update - 18 September 2003
The southern Africa region - Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe - continues to bear the devastating consequences of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and last year's drought. UNICEF is continuing its emergency programming in all six countries, focusing on the impact of HIV/AIDS coupled with food insecurity.

In response to the humanitarian crisis in Southern Africa, UNICEF, together with other UN agencies, has launched a regional appeal. UNICEF is requesting US$ 26.8 million to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected children and women in Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. UNICEF interventions will focus in the areas of nutrition, health, water and sanitation, education and protection.
