Liberia
Donor Update - 9 May 2005
The situation in Liberia remains fragile, as elections are coming up in October. The thousands of children who are now disarmed, demobilised and reunited with their families now urgently need to get the opportunity to start school or vocational training in order to be reintegrated to the society, and to recover from trauma and stigmatisation. As part of UNICEF's efforts to get Liberian children back to school, an Accelerated Learning Programme has been set up which gives children who have missed school years during the war a chance to catch up. Safe drinking water for schools and health centres as well as immunization against polio and other life-threatening diseases are also top priorities. To date, only 10% of the funding for the appeal of $30,213,000 have been covered. Totally $27,151,853 is needed for UNICEF's emergency programmes in Liberia of which 15 million are needed for immediate requirements.

Donor update - 24 May 2004
With the improving security situation, children are beginning to return to school, receive basic health services, and to the extent possible, resume a normal childhood. UNICEF has increased intervention in some of the hardest-to-reach areas of the country, supporting life-saving therapeutic feeding and measles immunisation. Still, in the next two months, UNICEF Liberia needs funding to support to support the education, health and the rights of children associated with fighting forces (CAFF).
