UNICEF in emergencies

Donor alerts and field reports

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

Donor update - 24 March 2005
The war in the DRC is one of Africa's most deadly, having killed almost 4 million people to date (at least ten times the number killed by the Indian Ocean tsunami). Today tens of thousands of IDPs are in dire need of assistance in the Ituri and North Kivu provinces. UNICEF, as well as other agencies, has again access to the population in these provinces, and is providing basic survival kits, emergency education, and water and sanitation. However, the funding for DRC is far from sufficient. Of the HAR/CAP appeal of US$34,620,414, UNICEF has only received US$12,373,398, while for immediate priorities alone UNICEF needs US$3.5 million.
