Afghanistan

Donor Update - 30 September 2004
The humanitarian situation of Afghan people, especially children and women, continues to deteriorate due to the prevailing insecurity and the drought, which is affecting large parts of the country. While a recent survey shows progress has been made in several areas, it also emphasizes that sustained efforts are required to tackle maternal mortality, access to water and sanitation, and protection of vulnerable children. Amongst its many projects in Afghanistan, UNICEF continues with its efforts to stop polio transmission among children, bring education to Afghan girls and assist 5,000 former child soldiers.

Donor update - 27 February 2004
Despite unstable security, drought, and economic hardship, UNICEF continues to implement activities in all of Afghanistan's provinces, ensuring under-served communities are not overlooked. UNICEF is implementing a three-tier strategy of support: (a) household contacts; (b) school as the centre for social change; and (c) improving environment for children.
