First day of school at Rioverde

The inauguration of the first year of universal basic education is a cause for celebration in Rioverde, a municipality in the Esmeraldas Province.  Many colored balloons float to the top of a tent shading the children from the strong tropical sun.  This is where the majority of the Afro Ecuadorian population lives - in the middle of a forest that borders Colombia.  One of the teachers hired by the Ministry of Education says with a smile that, at twenty-nine, she has the challenge of working at a poor school located inside the forest.

“At five years of age they are in the middle of childhood and want to know and explore everything.  It is the stage in which they must be nurtured.  They must play, sing, learn numbers, vowels,” she says convincingly.  She adds: “In Esmeraldas, many mothers that have not learned because of poverty do not want their children to do the same.”

“We began this dream three years ago and asked for the help of UNICEF and the Social Contract for Education,” comments the mayor of Rioverde.  “For us, children are the present and future of the country.  We need to prepare them to support the development of our county.”  He imagines out loud of the future of the children.  “We want them to be the leaders who guide the country,” he declares.
