Children's issues should always be present on the public policy agenda

In Ecuador, one of the most inequitable countries in the world, guaranteeing basic survival resources for the majority of people is an enormous challenge.  6,800 children die each year, comparable to the number of victims of hurricanes or earthquakes.

UNICEF has an extensive and well-known experience in supporting the provision of basic social services in emergency situations, including basic health, education, and protection, and in directly assisting children.  Thanks to the credibility established through forty years of working for children in Ecuador, today UNICEF can place children’s issues prominently on the public policy agenda for the government and civil society.

UNICEF informs the general public, private businesses and local and national governments about the difficult situation of the majority of children and youth in Ecuador.  The objective is to convince all the social actors that an investment in children is an investment that will always benefit Ecuador and contribute to its development.  Communication campaigns about serious problems, such as sexual abuse and child labor, strengthen this objective by speaking directly to the public.  In this way UNICEF is creating national capacity and public opinion favorable to child and adolescent rights.
