Investing in chidren in local governments
For the past several years, UNICEF has worked with 17 local governments from the Ecuadorian Coastal and Andean Regions to guarantee the progressive compliance of children’s rights in their territories. It has strengthened existing social ties and has helped local authorities work together. In the first semester of 2005 there was an 89% increase in social investment for children and adolescents in six small municipalities. UNICEF’s intention is to provide funds to replicate this process in other municipalities throughout Ecuador. In this way UNICEF is helping dream the dreams of indigenous children to become a reality.
