The Best Buy nutritional education program“The Best Buy” program started in the cities of Manta, Cuenca, Quito and Riobamba in 2004. It has trained 5,887 municipal and civil servants, who now promote this initiative in nutrition education. Since 2005, three other cities have joined: Saquisilí, Esmeraldas and Guamote. These municipalities, together with provincial health authorities implement this program because it helps them combat malnutrition. They do it in collaboration with Infant Development Networks, a conglomeration of institutions leading feeding programs for children under five and school children. The city of Guayaquil joined the programme in 2008. UNICEF has considered the different customs and habits of the principal ethnic groups of each region: mestizo, indigenous and Afro Ecuadorians. Each city has a wide array of recipes, which UNICEF is continually adding to. In 2005, there are 144 recipes, culturally adapted, adequately nutritious and inexpensive. The challenge is that the Ecuadorian families with scarce resources continue incorporating these recipes into their daily diet. For more info please click here (in spanish)
