The Observatory has found that Ecuadorian children living in rural areas have fewer chances to complete basic education

The Observatory of the Rights of Children and Adolescents analyses the fulfillment of the rights of Ecuadorian children aged 6 to 11.  In 2002, it found that for these children, rights were fulfilled in 3.8 out of a possible total of 10 points.  A recent analysis shows that their rights are currently fulfilled in 4.2/10.  The country has still a lot of work to do to improve the situation of its children in school age.

The Children Rights Index for children in school age (CRI-2) measured by the Observatory refers to three basic rights:

- To develop intellectual skills

- To play and spend time with their parents

- To enjoy a healthy and dignified life

In order to rate the fulfillment of these rights in the school years, every year the Citizen Observatory finds the answers to three questions (for the whole country as well as for each province) on the basis of national statistics:

How many children interrupted their education at the end of primary school?

How many children do not share recreational activities with their parents?

How many children grow up within a culture of punishment?
