Ecuador is a nation of young people.  The population under eighteen (2,551,821 boys and 2,499,267 girls) represents 41% of the nation's 12,191,519 inhabitants.

13% of the total population is under five years of age, 16% are between six and twelve, and 12% are between thirteen and sixteen years old.

Challenges children face in their physical, emotional and intellectual development vary with age.  In Ecuador,  UNICEF partner Observatory for the Rights of Children and Adolescents measures the fulfillment of children's rights through "children rights indexes" (or CRIs).  The indexes are calculated for three developmental stages: early childhood (0-5),   school-aged children (6-12) and adolescents (13-18).

The indexes measure the extent to which the country is fulfilling the rights of children and adolescents in survival, health and education, and help reveal where social, economic or cultural barriers  prevent the exercise of children's rights.  They summarize information into one single measure, in a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 representing the worst figures found in the country for each indicator and 10 indicating that the right is being fully excercised by all children.
