17 February 2014 - Marta Santos Pais, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Violence against Children, visited UNICEF's Regional Office for East Asia and the Pacific today for a dialogue with UNICEF staff and partner agencies.

The UN Secretary General appointed Ms Santos Pais to serve as a global independent advocate on the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against children. She mobilizes action and political support, generates understanding of the harmful effects of violence against children, and stimulates progress on its elimination.

At the forum, Ms Santos Pais discussed:

  • progress and priorities in the elimination of violence against children
  • the role of intergovernmental regional mechanisms and government bilateral cooperation
  • the campaign for universal ratification of the three Optional Protocols to the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

After the meeting, UNICEF staff and partners had their hands stamped #ENDviolence to show their support for the End Violence Against Children initiative.
