UNICEF Timor-Leste hands over school furniture to Ministry of Education
12 June 2013, Dili, Timor-Leste - The Ministry of Education received from UNICEF school furniture for 22 primary schools implementing the Eskola Foun. The students and teachers’ furniture were handed over to the Ministry during a simple rite held at the Ministry of Education.
Eskola Foun in Timor-Leste provides a comprehensive package of quality education services to transform traditional schools into child-centred schools that benefit children. Eskola Foun includes teacher-training on participatory methodologies, improved school management, safe and healthy school environment including construction of classrooms and water and sanitation facilities, and active participation of the community through the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Eskola Foun ensures that learning in schools is effective and meaningful for children, which contribute to the improvement in access, retention, completion and learning achievements of Timorese children.
Under the Eskola Foun initiative, UNICEF handed over to the Ministry of Education a total of 2,500 sets of students’ tables and chairs and 64 blackboards, teachers’ desks and chairs and teachers’ glass cabinet. Additional furniture is being procured for the next 20 to 25 schools that are being constructed or rehabilitated with UNICEF support this year.
“UNICEF has supported a total of 121 schools across the country with the Eskola Foun initiative. The school furniture which are handed over to MoE today will be distributed to 22 of these schools which have been recently constructed or rehabilitated. Over 6,200 students will directly benefit from these students’ chairs, tables and classroom blackboards. Teachers’ chairs, desks and cabinets will be also distributed to the 22 schools.”
“It is UNICEF’s hope that these school furniture, along with the overall support of Eskola Foun initiative, will help in further improving the overall quality of basic education. UNICEF stands committed to further advancing our joint efforts to better serve and benefit children of Timor-Leste,” said UNICEF Country Representative Ms. Hongwei Gao.
“This support from UNICEF is one step forward for us to improve our school management mainly with the chairs and tables for our students. The strategy of partnership established by our government with UNICEF is realised through the support of school furniture that we are going to receive today. This support is very important for us and it is therefore I would like to aware our directors to monitor the distribution and make sure that these furniture reaches each school and really used to benefit our students in the district”, said Mr. Freitas, Minister of Education.
