Advocacy for children
UNICEF is working to put and keep children’s rights on the agenda in East Asia and the Pacific. This requires influencing and working with a wide array of partners, including policy makers, government and civil society leaders, academic researchers, bilateral and multilateral donors. UNICEF seeks to ensure that child rights are at the forefront of economic and social policies, legislation and budget allocations. One of the most important forums for advocating the rights of children is the Ministerial Consultation, which is the only high-level gathering dedicated exclusively to children. UNICEF initiated the Ministerial Consultations after the World Summit for Children in 1990 and organizes them every two years. Involving government ministers, the Consultations have enabled discussion on the progress toward achieving global commitments to ensuring children’s rights. They have significantly contributed to the exchange of ideas and toward strengthening regional cooperation in the provision of services and protection for children. Ministerial Consultation outcomes typically feed into country-specific national plans of action for children. Children’s rights and culture in the Pacific
