Papua New Guinea's leaders acknowledge the urgent threat HIV/AIDS poses to the country's health and development, and are committed to a fast-track response. The second Medium-term Plan for the Prevention and Control of HIV/AIDS is now in force, and has been translated into a series of one-year action plans.

The Secretariat of the National AIDS Council has taken on the role of facilitating a comprehensive, multisectoral and sustainable response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The Secretariat has conducted a number of planning workshops at provincial level to develop provincial action plans to be implemented through Provincial AIDS Councils.

AusAID (the Australian Agency for International Development), PNG's biggest donor, has pledged considerable financial support over the next five years to be used through the National AIDS Council and Provincial AIDS Councils. UNICEF and UNFPA are the most active UN agencies in the area of HIV/AIDS.
