Maternal and Neonatal Health
Objectives
• 90% of pregnant women and newborns have access to quality services
• The neonatal mortality rate fell from 45 to 30 per 1000 live births
• The maternal mortality rate fell from 546 to 400 per 100000 live births
Strategies
• Establish a policy and regulatory framework for neonatal care
• Capacity building for newborns’ health service providers
• Improve the reference system
• Raise community awareness on the importance of maternal and newborn health
Major Activities
• Establish, in the short term, a neonatology unit at Dar El Hanan maternal health clinic and another one at Balbala maternity ward
• Train midwives and pediatric nurses on newborns illness management
• Identify newborns’ needs in terms of reference as regards the reference structure
• Develop / update data collection tools and train health staff on the use of those tools
• Promote maternal and neonatal health care through the media
• Educate health service providers about the immunization schedule for women of reproductive age
• Provide pregnant women with iron and folate supplements
