Quality communication can improve the lives of children

Communicating with Children is a resource pack that facilitates the process of learning about the critical importance of communication that is age- appropriate and child-friendly, holistic, positive, strengths-based and inclusive. We believe effective communication is a two-way process for sharing ideas and knowledge that involves understanding people: their needs, skills, beliefs, values, societies and cultures.

Messages that include children's needs, perspectives and points of view can make a difference in thier development: behaviourally (imitating sharing or imitating aggression), socially (making friends or bullying their classmates in school or on the internet); cognitively (learning school preparedness skills or developing short attention spans) and even physically (learning balanced nutrition or developing bad eating habits).

The resource pack presents four central principles for producing communication for children, each supported by guidelines, and also maps the different developmental characteristics and needs of children at different ages. We then explain our approach and illustrate the principles with positive examples from a range of countries and media, and age groups.  Read more...
