Education

UNICEF believes that all children have the right to education. They deserve to be able to read and write and take advantage of all the opportunities that literacy can bring. Yet, worlwide, only 60 per cent of children of secondary school age are enrolled in secondary school.

Montblanc has been a dedicated supporter of UNICEF's education programmes since 2004, helping UNICEF to achieve tangible programmatic results in various countries.

Lutz Bethge, CEO of Montblanc International explains, "with 61 million children not yet enrolled in school, it is our duty to take the necessary steps to empower these children with an education so that they have the knowledge, the skills and confidence to shape a better future for themselves and their communities".

Field visit to Ethiopia

From October 2-5, 2012, Actress Hilary Swank and Montblanc International CEO Lutz Bethge travelled to Ethiopia, to see both the progress achieved to date with the help of funds raised by Montblanc and the challenges still to overcome in the area of education. They joined Caryl M. Stern, President and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and Christian Schneider, Executive Director of UNICEF Germany, on a three-day trip to Ethiopia to understand how UNICEF works to change children's lives. This trip to Ethiopia provided an opportunity for the visitors to learn about the importance of education and the opportunities that it brings in some of the more disadvantaged communities in the world.

During the visit, Dr. Peter Salama, UNICEF Representative in Ethiopia said, "All children have the right to access education of good quality and thanks to our partnership with Montblanc, children of the poorest and most vulnerable families have the opportunity to unleash their potential through education. In Ethiopia alone, support from Montblanc has contributed to the establishment of 2,400 and rehabilitiation of 800 Alternative Basic Education Centers reaching 846,000 children including many orphans and pastoralists. Providing children with quality basic education will in turn give them significantly better changes in life".
