Gustavo Kuerten joins forces with UNICEF to promote sports as a tool for development

Brazilian tennis star Gustavo Kuerten signs pledge on behalf of children’s right to play sports.

JOINVILLE, Brazil, 15 July 2005 – Gustavo ‘Guga’ Kuerten signed a pledge on behalf of the rights of children and adolescents to play sports on Wednesday at the Joinville Tennis Club in Brazil. The pledge is part of an agreement between UNICEF and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).

“The practice of sports is essential for the development of every boy and girl. It increases the learning capacity, teaches important lessons about respecting others, leadership, team work and offers the opportunity for a healthier life to children and adolescents,” said UNICEF’s Manuel Buvinch.

In the pledge, Kuerten and other leading Brazilian players joined forces to promote the rights of every child and adolescents to play sports and enjoy leisure activities.

“It’s an honor to participate in this pledge with UNICEF,” said Kuerten. “I grew up practicing sports. When I was very young I always spent the afternoons at school practicing sports and doing all types of activities. Therefore I know how important and beneficial sport has been for my life, both personally and professionally. UNICEF and the ATP can help a lot and I hope I can contribute in the best possible way so all the children can play sports,” said Kuerten, whose own Guga Kuerten Institute assists thousands of Brazilian children. In 2003, Kuerten received the prestigious Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year award, as voted by ATP players.

“The ATP, UNICEF and Guga are working together for a good cause,” said ATP CEO Mark Miles. “To promote the practice of tennis is not our only goal but with UNICEF we are determined to help children in need. Guga is one of our leading ambassadors and I am sure his involvement will boost this worthy cause.”

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2005 the International Year of Sport and Physical Education.
