Inspired by the idea of a global marathon that travels from country to country, Orange, the global telecommunications company, created a unique event to benefit UNICEF, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the company’s founding in 1994.
Beginning in April 2004, Orange employees in 18 countries participated in an unusual relay commencing in each country on the day Orange was launched, starting in the UK and finished in Romania, in April 2005.
Employees travelled a measured distance by walking, cycling, sailing, rowing, skateboarding, or even gliding, as long as the mode of transport did not include the use of a motorized engine. The total distance travelled by all employees globally added up to the length between all Orange operating countries.
For every employee who took part and travelled the allocated distance, Orange donated 10 euros to UNICEF, totalling 101,000 euros. Funds raised support UNICEF’s programmes in the countries where Orange operates. Those countries include Botswana, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Romania, Slovakia and Thailand, among others.
