Tsunami disaster – countries in crisis

Manchester United stars call for tsunami support

NEW YORK, 13 January 2005 – Manchester United footballers have thrown their support behind UNICEF’s relief efforts for countries devastated by the December tsunami.

Players Roy Keane, Tim Howard, Gary Neville, Quinton Fortune, Rio Ferdinand, and Ryan Giggs have recorded a video appeal for UNICEF to be aired throughout the world. The video will help UNICEF raise funds to save and protect thousands of children belonging to the ‘tsunami generation’.

An impressive 21,720 pounds was collected from fans during a recent game between Manchester United and Exeter City; every penny will go towards UNICEF's relief efforts. The club has donated 50,000 pounds, while Manager Sir Alex Ferguson and his players have given a further 100,000 pounds from their own funds. Sir Alex is also busy with televised fundraising campaigns.

The United for UNICEF partnership, launched in 1999, has raised more than 1,000,000 pounds so far for UNICEF’s work. Click here to learn more about the United for UNICEF partnership.
