My first appointment with a communications media director when I got to Colombia as UNICEF Representative, was with El Tiempo’s (then) co-director, Rafael Santos. He was wrapping up a planning meeting with Enrique Santos, the other co-director, and Roberto Pombo, general editor of the newspaper.
   
FIRST FORUM ON HIV AND AIDS
IN COLOMBIA
The first Forum on Children and Adolescents affected by HIV and Aids was held recently in Cali. The event was attended by approximately 100 children affected by the disease, who participated by telling about their experiences and listening to proposals for guaranteeing the full exercise of their rights.

More than 1,791 children in Belén, Antioquia enjoying school equipment
In mid-August the HomeCenter store in Medellín’s Belén barrio and UNICEF presented a complete supply of school furniture, thanks to voluntary contributions from store customers from all over the country, in order to continue supporting the education sector in Colombia.
 
New Regional Director for UNICEF in Latin America and the Caribbean

September 25, 2009. In order to commemorate the 20 years of implementation of Family Jurisdiction in Colombia, the High Courts of the Judiciary District of Bogotá will hold the International Seminar on “Advances in Family Law”, in the auditorium of the Bogotá and Cundinamarca Courts Building between October 1 and 3 of this year.

“Child-Protecting Communities”


The AFECTO Against Child Abuse Association, with the support of thirteen other organizations, will held the III Pan American Congress on Prevention and Attention for Child Abuse in Bogotá, between September 23 and 25. The purpose of the congress is to contribute to the generation and strengthening of strategies for preventing and intervening in cases of maltreatment and sexual abuse of children and adolescents in Colombia.

Most of the victims of conflicts are defenceless persons. Innocent civilians. Fathers, mothers, children. Without peace, they have little hope of improving their lives. Little hope to free themselves from poverty.

On August 20, the El Tiempo Editorial House and UNICEF signed a partnership which, among its goals, seeks to publicize and support the political and economic decisions to put Article 44 of the Political Constitution of Colombia – according to which the rights of children prevail over the rights of others – into practice.

Statement by UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman on the death of 12-year-old child bride from Yemen

NEW YORK, 14 September 2009 - "It was with great sadness that we learned of the untimely death of 12-year-old Fawziya Youssef from Yemen. Fawziya was forced into a child marriage with a man at least twice her age. She became pregnant and she and her baby both died after struggling for three days in protracted labor, according to media reports.

Compensar and UNICEF join forces
to foster the rights of children


The Caja de Compensación Familiar (Compensar) and UNICEF have signed an inter-institutional cooperation agreement, with the aim of joining efforts for raising technical, physical, administrative and economic resources for designing and implementing social projects to improve the quality of life of the children, adolescents and youths of Colombia.

Voluntary contributions from HomeCenter customers
bring back the smiles of Colombian children


For the past four years HomeCenter and UNICEF have sustained an alliance designed to contribute to the education of low-income children through the voluntary donation of change from purchases by store customers around the country. The money collected at the cash registers is invested in infrastructure, school equipment and educational tools, as a manifestation of support for populations that are vulnerable or in emergency situations in Colombia.

BBVA and UNICEF
making children happy


Around 4,000 children in the municipality of Tumaco and the veredas of Candelillas and Palo Seco, affected by the flooding of the Mira River that destroyed schools last February, were benefited with a donation of around 135 million pesos from the customers of BBVA Bank through its network of 755 automatic tellers all over the country – as part of the alliance between BBVA and UNICEF.
