When child sexual abuse is present, indifference is acceptance

Every hour, every day, 228 children (1) – and especially girls – are sexually exploited in Latin America and the Caribbean. On World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse we have to raise our voices against this social scourge. This date reminds of the urgent need to guarantee the right of children and adolescents to fully enjoy their rights in a protective environment. It’s time to recognize the magnitude of this problem, and act accordingly.

Ministry of Education and UNICEF join efforts to expand education policy programmes in vulnerable populations

Bogotá, November 17/2008. On Tuesday, November 18, the Ministry of National Education and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) signed a framework agreement with which they plan to achieve greater articulation of the Institutional Education Projects (PEI) with the Education for Sexuality and Construction of Citizenship Programme, human rights, peace and coexistence, labour competencies and formation for work – and the development of citizenship competencies.

World gathers in Brazil to reinvigorate fight against sexual exploitation of children

RIO DE JANEIRO, 25 November 2008 - Nearly 3,000 participants from over 125 countries are in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to exchange lessons and experiences in the fight against child sexual exploitation, review progress, and reinforce commitments.

LAW ON CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

On August 17 the Bill of Statutory Law was presented to Congress “in which the law on Children and Adolescents is promulgated”, a proposal that prioritizes eight basic themes: Nutrition, Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Special Protection, Civil Registration, Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality, and Water and Sanitation. Based on what you know about the country’s situation, what would you propose doing to consolidate these priorities?
