CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE EXPOSED TO RISKS IN PUBLIC MANIFESTATIONS
Bogotá, 21 April 2009. With the aim of protecting children and adolescents against any act that mighty place their lives, dignity and personal integrity at risk, the General Director of the Colombian Family Welfare Institute, Elvira Forero Hernández; the Inspector General of the Nation, Alejandro Ordóñez Maldonado and UNICEF’s Representative for Colombia Paul Martin join in issuing a call to those participating in marches or citizen mobilizations, to remind them of the obligation of protecting the vulnerable population.

NEW YORK, 13 April 2009 - UNICEF is deeply concerned by reports that Saudi Arabian tribunals have decided not to annul the marriage of an eight-year-old girl. Irrespective of circumstances or the legal framework, the marriage of a child is a violation of that child’s rights.

There is worldwide concern about the situation in which child victims of HIV and Aids are living. It is estimated that 9 out of every 10 children living with the virus acquired it during gestation, birth or lactation. The others acquired it through contaminated injections, blood transfusions or infected blood products, sex abuse or early, unprotected sexual relations.

UNICEF Celebrates Change Day

"Just one day for a whole lifetime" is the central message with which UNICEF is celebrating Change Day, a campaign promoting the solidarity of the country’s students with the children and adolescents affected by the heavy rainy season that punished the country at the beginning of this year, and in its wake left more than 1.2 million persons in very precarious situations, more than half of them under the age of 18.
