CHILDREN AND MINES

Aurelio’s sweet nature doesn’t seem to mesh with his tragedy. He is 12 years old, and was born in one of the Antioquia towns affected by the conflict. He’s in third grade and he likes to study. However, football is his real thing, although he can’t play like before. A mine blew off one of his legs, and for the last three years he has been leaning on a crutch, which helps him to use his prosthesis, which he has to change every six months.
   
Statement by Executive Director Ann M. Veneman concerning UNICEF support for China’s disaster relief efforts
NEW YORK, 15 May 2008 - "UNICEF is working closely with the Government and the people of China to assist suffering children in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck Sichuan province on 12 May. Students were prominent among the victims of the quake, which struck during school hours and resulted in the collapse of a number of school buildings.

A GOVERNORS’ SUMMIT PRIORITY

Bogotá 28 May 2008. Creating policies and actions to promote good treatment and prevent the maltreatment of Colombian children and adolescents is one of the main themes planned for the Sixth Meeting of Governors for Children, Adolescents and Youth, to be held in Paipa, Boyacá, on June 12 and 13, 2008.
 
UNICEF and partners appeal for funding to aid families in Myanmar’s cyclone zone
NEW YORK, USA, 8 May 2008 – To meet the urgent needs of children and families affected by the cyclone last weekend in Myanmar, UNICEF today issued an emergency appeal for $8.2 million. The initial funding request is part of an interagency appeal prepared with the organization's UN partners.



LAW ON CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
On August 17 the Bill of Statutory Law was presented to Congress “in which the law on Children and Adolescents is promulgated”, a proposal that prioritizes eight basic themes: Nutrition, Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Special Protection, Civil Registration, Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality, and Water and Sanitation. Based on what you know about the country’s situation, what would you propose doing to consolidate these priorities?

ERADICATE THE COMMERCIAL SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS


Bogotá 30 May 2008. In order to prevent and eradicate the sexual exploitation of children in Colombia, the country’s 32 departmental governors will present strategies for a timely national and local intervention in the problem at the Sixth Meeting of Governors for Children, Adolescents and Youth.

China requests emergency supplies to aid in quake recovery

SICHUAN, China, 15 May 2008 – Two days after the largest earthquake to hit China in a generation, the Chinese Government yesterday formally requested the support of the international community to respond to the needs of affected families.

PROTECTING CHILDREN AGAINST COMMERCIAL SEXUAL EXPLOITATION – A PRIORITY

Bogotá, May 2008 – With the aim of preventing child sexual exploitation and reducing risk factors, last May 8 the National Plan of Action for the Prevention and Eradication of the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents was launched. The Plan seeks to learn the characteristics and dimensions of the commercial sexual exploitation of children, make it visible, and generate strategies for intervening at the national, departmental and local levels.

UNICEF crisis response focuses on water and hygiene in aftermath of Cyclone Nargis

NEW YORK, 7 May 2008 – With 5,000 square km underwater and an estimated 1 million people homeless and in need of assistance, Myanmar continues to reel from the effects of Cyclone Nargis, which struck last weekend. In its response to the crisis, UNICEF is focusing on providing safe water and hygiene supplies to children and families at risk of life-threatening water-bourne diseases.
