NEW YORK / GENEVA, 29 JUNE 2007 – UNICEF today condemned continuing attacks on schoolchildren and educational facilities in conflict zones around the world. "Attacks on schoolchildren are unacceptable,” said UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman. “Schools must be safe environments for children to learn and thrive.”

NEW YORK/GENEVA – I am deeply concerned about the number of deadly attacks on aid workers that have occurred over the past week, in the Central African Republic, in Lebanon, in the occupied Palestinian territory and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

On August 17 the Bill of Statutory Law was presented to Congress “in which the law on Children and Adolescents is promulgated”, a proposal that prioritizes eight basic themes: Nutrition, Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Special Protection, Civil Registration, Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality, and Water and Sanitation. The IV Meeting of Governors for Children and Adolescents: Facts and Rights, to be held June 14 and 15 in Valledupar will for the first time include the participation of the nation’s private sector. The event thus will offer a good scenario for continuing the process of articulating Corporate Social Responsibility with State public policies for the guarantee of the rights of children and adolescents – more than 16 million Colombians.
Children and adolescents to be present at the IV Meeting of Governors for Children and Adolescents: Facts and Rights

Bogotá, 4 June 2007. Twenty-five children, adolescents and youths between the ages of 11 and 26 will participate in the IV Meeting of Governors for Children and Adolescents: Facts and Rights, to be held June 14 and 15 in the department of Cesar. This meeting is convened by the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation, the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare and UNICEF.
