When child sexual abuse is present, indifference is acceptance

Every hour, every day, 228 children (1) – and especially girls – are sexually exploited in Latin America and the Caribbean. On World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse we have to raise our voices against this social scourge. This date reminds of the urgent need to guarantee the right of children and adolescents to fully enjoy their rights in a protective environment. It’s time to recognize the magnitude of this problem, and act accordingly.
   
With Canadian Government support, UNICEF brings humanitarian aid to Colombian children affected by the flooding emergency
Bogotá, February 19, 2009. With a contribution of one billion pesos, the Government of Canada will support the humanitarian assistance that UNICEF – as part of the United Nations Emergency Group (UNETE) – is providing to thousands of families that are victims of the heavy rain emergency that has been punishing the country since last year.

UNICEF: Female Genital Cutting Must Stop
NEW YORK, 6 February 2009 – UNICEF today called for increased efforts to end female genital cutting, as the world marks International Day against Female Genital Mutilation.



LAW ON CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
On August 17 the Bill of Statutory Law was presented to Congress “in which the law on Children and Adolescents is promulgated”, a proposal that prioritizes eight basic themes: Nutrition, Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Special Protection, Civil Registration, Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality, and Water and Sanitation. Based on what you know about the country’s situation, what would you propose doing to consolidate these priorities?

Last February 9, children from 32 of Bogotá’s schools received education kits, thanks to donations from visitors to the Divercity theme park, an entity that in partnership with UNICEF has been implementing this campaign for more than two years.

Bogotá, February 11, 2009 - Colombia’s Vice President, Francisco Santos Calderón, presented the second report of the “Inter-Sectorial Commission for the Prevention of Recruitment and Utilization of Children by Illegal Armed Groups, which is in charge of articulating and orienting the State’s actions to reduce the factors leading to recruitment.
