Young people the most heavily affected
In Colombia, a new case of HIV/AIDS is reported among young men and women every day. This figure contrasts with the ones reported 20 years ago, when a new case was detected every week. As in many countries, the HIV/AIDS epidemic affects the most vulnerable populations and increasingly affects young people.

Chocó Indigenous Community Receives Humanitarian Attention

Last February 2 and 3, a mission comprising functionaries from UNICEF, UNHCR and the United Nations security office visited the San Juan area of Chocó, where they plan to implement a humanitarian attention programme for the Waunaan indigenous community affected by the intensification of the armed conflict in the region.

On August 17 the Bill of Statutory Law was presented to Congress “in which the law on Children and Adolescents is promulgated”, a proposal that prioritizes eight basic themes: Nutrition, Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Special Protection, Civil Registration, Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality, and Water and Sanitation. Preparations begin for the Latin American Sanitation Forum

Bogotá D.C., February 13, 2007. Preparations have begun for Sanitation Forum 2007, the first initiative on this theme to be held in Latin America, to take place in Colombia in the month of November. During the Forum, to be called A challenge to overcome poverty and inequity in Latin America, a Meeting of Latin American Countries will be held -- a gathering in which each country will be able to present its experiences in the area of sanitation, and share its roadmaps with the other participants.

Adolescent voices challenge the lack of opportunities through radio

Bogotá D.C., February 12, 2007. A group of 100 adolescents has found radio to be a way of enjoying themselves and learning by doing in the department of Chocó, where opportunities for recreation and integral development of young people are limited. These adolescents are part of the University of Chocó’s School of Communication, broadcasting over FM frequency 97.3
