When child sexual abuse is present, indifference is acceptance

Every hour, every day, 228 children (1) – and especially girls – are sexually exploited in Latin America and the Caribbean. On World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse we have to raise our voices against this social scourge. This date reminds of the urgent need to guarantee the right of children and adolescents to fully enjoy their rights in a protective environment. It’s time to recognize the magnitude of this problem, and act accordingly.

Last November 26 and 27, a devastating flood in the San Juan river basin in Chocó destroyed more than one thousand houses and ruined hundreds of hectares of crops in the municipalities of Nóvita (Tamaná River), Medio San Juan (Condoto and San Juan Rivers) Istmina and Litoral del San Juan. The water reached unexpected levels of more than 5 meters – whereas in the past what were considered large floods only rose to two meters.
