Threats against children

There are 2.2 billion children in the world, almost half of them belonging to impoverished families that are deprived of many of their rights. Their lives transpire without water, basic sanitation, health care, appropriate housing or education.
   
UNICEF welcomes appointment of next Executive Director
Responding to the official announcement of its next Executive Director, UNICEF today congratulated Ann M. Veneman and said it looked forward to “welcoming her in May and supporting her as she leads UNICEF’s ongoing work for the world’s children.”
UNICEF inaugurated the Pantano de Vargas School, in Cali
With a cost of around 800 million pesos and a capacity of more than 1,000 children, the Pantano de Vargas School was inaugurated on January 26, in the community of Hormiguero, in Cali. The school is the fruit of efforts made by public and private sector entities and private individuals who made credit-card donations, in a process supervised by UNICEF.

 
UNICEF Seeks $763 Million for ‘Forgotten Emergencies’
GENEVA, 26 January 2005 – UNICEF today appealed for more than $750 million to help millions of children struggling to survive conflicts and other emergencies in countries around the world, saying that the tsunami had shown that people care deeply about children in desperate situations but are often not aware of them.



CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL LIMITATIONS
It is estimated that 12% of Colombians – approximately 5,000,000 persons – have some kind of special cognitive, sensory or motor limitation. Many families view these special limitations or disabilities as “tragedies”, making it difficult for them to develop active attitudes of positive support for the affected children. These children are often relegated to the furthest corner of the home, the school, and statistics. What is your message of support or motivation for those families in which one of their members has a disability or special limitation?

UNHCR evaluates prevention, protection and attention for forced displacement

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) presented the main recommendations and conclusions of its recent assessment of Public Policy on Prevention, Protection and Attention for forced internal displacement (2002-2004).

Youths gather to build a better world: the 2005 Jamboree

With the aim of aligning and integrating the United Nations Millennium Goals with the Development Plan of the international Scouting movement, around 9,500 youths met with governmental and international institutions to celebrate the “2005 Pan American Jamboree”, between January 8 and 16, in Argentina.
