When child sexual abuse is present, indifference is acceptance

Every hour, every day, 228 children (1) – and especially girls – are sexually exploited in Latin America and the Caribbean. On World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse we have to raise our voices against this social scourge. This date reminds of the urgent need to guarantee the right of children and adolescents to fully enjoy their rights in a protective environment. It’s time to recognize the magnitude of this problem, and act accordingly.
   
When children get their beds wet
In many of the country’s riverside communities, the rhetorical figure of “crossing the river” when children wet their beds has lost all meaning, because the river wets everybody’s bed, twice a year, all their lives.

UNICEF providing $ 1350,000 dollars to deal with floods emergency in Colombia

Bogotá, December 22. In response to the serious rainy season emergency that is punishing the country – which to date has left more than 1,157,000 persons affected, including around half a million children and adolescents – UNICEF, as part of the United Nations Emergency Team (UNETE), will provide $1,350,000 dollars to address the immediate needs of children and women in the most affected communities in the Middle Magdalena and La Mojana regions, and especially the indigenous and Afro-descendant communities in the Department of Chocó.
 
World gathers in Brazil to reinvigorate fight against sexual exploitation of children
RIO DE JANEIRO, 25 November 2008 - Nearly 3,000 participants from over 125 countries are in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to exchange lessons and experiences in the fight against child sexual exploitation, review progress, and reinforce commitments.



LAW ON CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
On August 17 the Bill of Statutory Law was presented to Congress “in which the law on Children and Adolescents is promulgated”, a proposal that prioritizes eight basic themes: Nutrition, Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Special Protection, Civil Registration, Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality, and Water and Sanitation. Based on what you know about the country’s situation, what would you propose doing to consolidate these priorities?

BBVA and UNICEF to channel money donated through automatic teller campaign, to education for children affected by the flood emergency

Bogotá, December 22, 2008. In the first three weeks of December, customers using BBVA automatic tellers have donated more than $120 million pesos to be used for providing education for children in the communities affected by the flood emergency. It is hoped that during the remaining weeks of December and throughout January the contributions by Colombians will continue, making it possible to provide quality education to the families affected by the heavy rains that have punished the country this year.

UNICEF receives first shipment of supplies for communities affected by the flood emergency

Bogotá, December 22 de 2008. Last Friday, December 18, the first supplies UNICEF is providing to the country’s communities affected by the flooding emergency arrived directly from Copenhagen, Denmark. UNICEF Representative Paul Martin received this shipment, which is part of the US$1,350,000 donation that the United Nations agency is donating to the communities of the La Mojana and Middle Magdalena regions and the Department of Chocó.

Seventh Meeting of Governors for Children, Adolescents and Youth Ends

Bogotá, December 12, 2008. With evidence of significant progress by territorial policies on child-related themes and a call for coherence among diagnoses, planning and budgets in departmental and municipal development plans, the Seventh Meeting of Governors for Children, Adolescents and Youth came to a conclusion in the city of Barranquilla (Atlántico).

Music marathon for quality education

The Fundación Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Colombia (“Juvenile Symphonic Orchestra of Colombia Foundation”) FOSJC, will hold the second version of the musical marathon entitled “16 Hours with Our Hands on Our Hearts”, with the participation of artists of national and international renown that are part of the foundation.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

All countries ratifying the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities are legally obligated to enforce the stipulations of the treaty, within the local legal system. Countries ratifying it must establish the legislative, administrative and any other kinds of measures necessary for locally implementing the international norms established in the treaty.

“Your peso counts”: a voluntary contribution
to the country’s education


Last November 28, children in five schools in the municipality of Bello, Antioquia received important school equipment thanks to the Money donated by Homecenter customers, through the “Your Peso Counts” campaign, which has been underway for more than 4 years, as the result of a partnership with UNICEF.
