a plenary session of the XVI International
AIDS Conference here today, WHO HIV/AIDS
Director Dr Kevin De Cock reported
that the number of people receiving
HIV antiretroviral therapy in sub-Saharan
Africa has surpassed 1 million for
the first time, a ten-fold increase
in treatment access in the region since
December 2003. |

Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality,
and Water and Sanitation. Based on what

UNICEF and UN partners step up humanitarian aid
in southern Lebanon
NEW YORK, USA, 28 August 2006 – As the fragile ceasefire between
Israel and Hezbollah holds in southern Lebanon and UN Secretary-General
Kofi Annan makes a diplomatic visit to the region, Lebanese children
continue to suffer from inadequate services, water shortages and a lack
of basic supplies.

press, published weekly by PANDI Agency, has reached
number 400. After two years of monitoring the information
registered in national communication media on children
and adolescents, the agency is now consolidated.
Today it monitors nine newspapers and two magazines. |

Organization of American States and Inter-American
Development Bank launch initiative to grant official
identity to millions of unregistered children
BOGOTA, 8 August 2006 - The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), UNICEF
and the Organization of American States (OAS) announced a new alliance
today to work toward ensuring free, timely, universal birth registration
for children in Latin America and the Caribbean by 2015, with 50 per cent
progress in that direction by 2010.

convene journalists for the National Press Prize
for Child and Adolescent Rights
Managua, August 7, 2006.- The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF),
on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of its founding, and the School
of Communication Sciences of the Universidad Centroamericana (UCA), have
announced a competition for the National Press Prize for the Human Rights
of Children and Adolescents.
