NEW YORK, 7 April 2009 - “The critical importance of healthcare to emergency response is the theme for this year’s World Health Day 2009. The annual day commemorates the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO).
   
CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE EXPOSED TO RISKS IN PUBLIC MANIFESTATIONS
Bogotá, 21 April 2009. With the aim of protecting children and adolescents against any act that mighty place their lives, dignity and personal integrity at risk, the General Director of the Colombian Family Welfare Institute, Elvira Forero Hernández; the Inspector General of the Nation, Alejandro Ordóñez Maldonado and UNICEF’s Representative for Colombia Paul Martin join in issuing a call to those participating in marches or citizen mobilizations, to remind them of the obligation of protecting the vulnerable population.

UNICEF representative in Colombia Paul Martin is writing an article on Social Public Spending and Child Rights in Colombia, for the office of the Comptroller General of the Republic to be published in edition 326 of the magazine Economía Colombiana.

Summary. Colombia has registered important progress in improving the living conditions of its children, adolescents. In the past decade it has reported a significant improvement in several indictors on health, survival and development. (Spanish version)
 
Statement by UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman on Child Marriage
NEW YORK, 13 April 2009 - UNICEF is deeply concerned by reports that Saudi Arabian tribunals have decided not to annul the marriage of an eight-year-old girl. Irrespective of circumstances or the legal framework, the marriage of a child is a violation of that child’s rights.



EMERGENCY IN COLOMBIA FROM HEAVY RAINS
Given the serious rainy season emergency that is punishing the country, and which to date has left more than a million persons affected, including more than half a million children, what measures do you think should be taken to prevent a rain emergency? What would you suggest so that all of us together can help and give support for the affected populations?

UNICEF: Grave violations of children’s rights during armed conflicts must end

NEW YORK, 29 April 2009 – UNICEF today joined the Secretary-General’s call for an end to the recruitment and sexual exploitation of children by armed groups in theatres of conflict, at the Security Council discussion of the Secretary-General’s annual report on Children and Armed Conflict.

UNICENTRO Supports UNICEF’s Humanitarian work:

UNICENTRO Shopping Centre in Bogotá is supporting UNICEF’s projects in Colombia in favor of child victims of the effects of the rainy season emergency. UNICENTRO has been collaborating with UNICEF for the past 12 years, donating a space on the first floor where the organization has a stand where visitors may acquire cards, gifts and other products for all occasions. The funds raised in this way are used to promote programmes for the protection of the rights of children and adolescents in Colombia.

The Ministry of National Education, in partnership with the United States International Development Agency (USAID), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Corporación Opción Legal and UNICEF are implementing the Pedagogy and Child Protection Programme to create processes for developing citizen competencies in schools.

UNICEF launches the Animated Series


Last April 1 in the city of Bogotá, UNICEF and the Fundación Instituto para la Construcción de la Paz (FICONPAZ) launched the animated series “The Diary of Dreams”, which recounts the adventures of six Colombian children that reflect on their rights and their chances for enjoying them in their families and with the community. In each chapter, the characters share their experiences, concerns and dreams with the viewer.

On World Malaria Day, UNICEF highlights successes but calls for greater effort


WASHINGTON, D.C. - 24 April 2009 – Progress has been made in combating malaria, particularly in Africa where the disease is most prevalent, but more must be done to address the global scourge, UNICEF said, as it released a new joint report on the eve of World Malaria Day.

Landmines and explosive remnants of war continue to threaten children


GENEVA, 3 April 2009 – Landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) continue to pose an enormous threat to children worldwide, UNICEF noted today in the lead up to the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action on 4 April.
