UNICEF mourns death of staff member

NEW YORK, 20 February, 2007 - UNICEF is mourning the tragic loss of staff member Maria-Solange Auteri, 32, who died Friday in New York after suffering a sudden and unexpected brain aneurysm.

Maria-Solange, affectionately and widely-known by her nickname, “Pido,” was a beloved presence at UNICEF headquarters, where she began working in 2003 as a consultant with the Global Staff Association. In April 2005, she served as Programme Officer in the Programme Funding Office and in February 2006 was appointed as Planning Officer in the Division of Human Resources.

“We are heartbroken at the untimely loss of this vibrant young woman,” said Steven Allen, UNICEF’s Director of Human Resources. “Maria-Solange was full of life. She was one of those extraordinary people who impressed everyone who knew her with her passion, energy, intelligence and devotion to her work, her family and her friends.”

A dual national of France and Italy, Maria-Solange in 1997 received a Dottore in Scienze della Communicazion with honours, from Scienze della Communicazione, Universita degli Studi di Siena, Italy. From July to December 1996, she had a fellowship of the Universita degli Studi di Siena in Public Opinion and Persuasion, Corporate PR, Marketing Communication at the College of Communication at Boston University in the United States.

Prior to joining UNICEF, she worked as a communications consultant in the private sector.

UNICEF extends its deepest sympathies to Maria-Solange’s immediate family – her father, Dr. Alberto Auteri; her mother, Ms. Danielle Benchaya; and her sister, Ms. Guendalina Auteri, as well as to Maria-Solange’s many close friends and colleagues.
