UNICEF Activities

Activities are implemented to support the progressive harmonization of the national laws with Conventions, to reinforce the capacities of the legal, police system and local authorities, and to promote behavioural change in communities and the families. In collaboration with the other agencies of the United Nations, with the reinforcement of the national system of collection and analysis of the social statistics. It will identify vulnerable groups and priority interventions, but also to reinforce the plea for a better allowance and use of the national budget in favour of the basic social services.
Interventions in favour of the children needing special measures for protection will be developed. At the national level, the UNICEF supports the development of the national policies of health and basic education in an effort to eradicate polio and maintain immunization coverage.

In the area of HIV/AIDS prevention UNICEF supports interventions in selected districts, and provides staff training and access to quality basic services in education and health.

The Girls’ Education programme is increasing rates of literacy, completion, and dropout by:

  • Locating schools closer to communities without schools, recruiting female teachers at the local
level, and providing in-service training to improve teachers’ performance.
  • Preparing a relevant, gender sensitive curriculum, and developing a flexible timetable and
educational programmes for girls in Non Formal Education Centres.
  • Providing water and sanitation facilities, school equipment and didactic materials, and enhancing
school management and involving communities in school construction.
  • Establishing a democratic school management system that includes pupils, parents, school staff, and
community representatives who mobilize community support for education.
  • Instituting a Commission of Monitoring and Evaluation to monitor programme activities and use the
information to help in guiding programme implementation.
