解决该国岛屿之间的不平衡状况是佛得角现在面临的重大挑战之一。虽然绝对贫困率在过去的15年中大幅下降，但是贫困仍然普遍存在，而且极大的增加了儿童易受伤害的程度。国家整体相对稳定，但是人们一直担忧佛得角已经成为国际非法毒品交易的中转站。

佛得角儿童面对的问题

超过80%的新生婴儿没有像法律规定的那样在满月以内进行出生登记。
来自贫困家庭的儿童，尤其是女童，经常辍学。他们中的很多人在没有接受任何培训或没有任何技能的情况下就开始找工作，因此最终沦为无业青年。
三分之一的女性和17%的男性是文盲。70%的男性上过小学，而女性上过小学的仅为60%。
没有任何的动员和宣传活动来教育青年人有关预防艾滋病的知识。

帮助儿童的行动和成果

联合国儿童基金会支持国家免疫日。除了提供交通运输及社会动员服务之外，联合国儿童基金会还提供疫苗以预防脊髓灰质炎，甲肝以及麻疹。
小学的净入学率超过90%。中学女孩平均出勤率现在已经超过男孩。
在圣卡塔林那和圣米格尔岛，130 位社区指导员和助理指导员，以及17位早期幼儿协调员接受了培训。
联合国儿童基金会为圣地亚哥和圣安唐岛的五所预备学校配置了学习设施。
联合国儿童基金会及其合作伙伴为数十名受虐待和受忽视的儿童提供精神支持。
