United for UNICEF SMS Prize Competition
Congratulations to Christopher Humphrey, winner of a trip for two to Old Trafford to see Manchester United in action in the United for UNICEF SMS Prize Competition! In front of assembled VIPs and journalists, Beijing Guo'an Deputy Chairman Zhang Lu and MasterCard International General Manager Willie Fung drew the lucky winner from the entrants who had correctly predicted the score of the Manchester United v Beijing Hyundai match held at the Workers' Stadium on July 26th.
In addition to the grand prize, other lucky winners scooped prizes of genuine signed football memorabilia including team shirts signed by the Manchester United first team, by the Beijing Guo'an squad, and individual shirts signed by United stars Ryan Giggs and Quinton Fortune, not to mention a FIFA ball signed by Pele. The United for UNICEF SMS Prize Competition was the second phase of this summer's MasterCard "Football in the Community" campaign which begun in May with the MasterCard Beijing Community Cup, also held at the Workers' Stadium in Beijing. The competition featured 48 corporate and media teams and was won by Xinhua PR Newswire. Incorporating both the MasterCard Beijing Community Cup and the United for UNICEF SMS Prize Competition, the campaign has raised just under 200,000 RMB for Beijing charity Hui Ling, and for United for UNICEF, a partnership between Manchester United and UNICEF which is currently working in Sichuan Province to combat the trafficking of women and children. United for UNICEF fundraising activities were carried out in Hong Kong, Beijing and Tokyo during the recent Manchester United Asian Tour, and are being supported by Malaysian Airlines as an element of the airline's commitment to improving lives of the world's most vulnerable, especially children.
The campaign reached a climax just before the Manchester United match kicked off as the campaign organisers and MasterCard International's China General Manager Willie Fung presented the cheque to David Gill Chief Executive of Manchester United, Dr Christian Voumard, Representative for UNICEF China. ClubFootball General Manager Keith Bradbury summed up the campaign: “With so many organizations involved, the campaign could easily have become unmanageable. Thankfully, all parties involved have been incredibly supportive, and we are especially grateful to MasterCard International for their sponsorship of the campaign. Although there are obviously too many people involved to thank everyone individually, United for Unicef, Manchester United, Malaysia Airlines, Beijing Guo'an, Document Solution and ROK New Net all deserve a mention for their cooperation throughout. We look forward to continuing our efforts to bring all levels of football together to positively impact the community both at home and beyond.” Return flights for the first prize winners are kindly donated by Malaysia Airlines, proud to be the Official Airline of the Manchester United Asia Tour 2005.
