Johnson & JohnsonThere are nearly 12 million primary school drop-outs in China. Many are migrants or ethnic minorities, and about two-thirds are girls. Not only are they lacking education, but their social position exposes them to a higher risk of drug addiction, HIV/AIDS, sexual exploitation, and other dangers. Having dropped out of the formal school system, they are deprived of essential life skills that help them protect themselves. The situation is gravest in the Western region of the country. Johnson & Johnson has donated US $85,000 for out-of-school adolescents in 14 provinces and 46 counties of Western China. The company is funding the development of a life skills manual on physical and emotional health, as well as a health kit containing teaching materials to be used in educational workshops for adolescents. Approximately 5,000 health manuals and more than 1,200 health kits will be distributed.
