Children with Disabilities

Though much progress has been made to promote the rights of China's 10 million disabled children, many continue to face discrimination and are denied adequate access to education, health and other basic services. Girls with disabilities face double discrimination. In rural areas, some children are even locked in the house because parents are ashamed of the child's disability. Discrimination can also take the form of unequal access education. For example, while China's national enrolment rate has reached 99%, the enrolment rate for disabled children remains 76%, according to the China Disabled Persons Federation. Not only physical, but also mental and social barriers prevent children with disabilities from enjoying their right to education.  Some schools remain inaccessible to physically disabled children, while other schools are simply unwilling to accept them or unable to meet their special requirements.
