UNICEF's advocacy with the Asian Development Bank, the World Health Organization, and Chinese government officials and food producers has raised awareness of the need to devise a nutrition policy framework encompassing multiple government agencies. A measurable outcome of success will be the inclusion of a chapter on Maternal and Child Nutrition in China's next Five-Year Plan (2006-2010), which would allocate additional budget toward this cause. UNICEF is currently advocating for such a chapter.

China has pledged its continued commitment to work toward eliminating IDD so that more than 90% coverage of iodized salt is achieved in poor and remote areas.

In part because of continuing advocacy efforts, there has been a major drop in  malnutrition. Although the chief reason for this is economic development, persistent advocacy was also a contributing factor. Advocacy was conducted in such as way as to spotlight accomplishments to date. For example, Beijing was chosen as a location
for the IDD Conference because of China's progress in conquering IDD through universal salt iodization. The hosting of this gathering in Beijing led to a renewed National Plan of Action (2003-2010) to ensure elimination of IDD down to the county level.
